I was in between hockey good times. Morning skate was over, and our last game before an extended road trip was six hours away. Most peeps would be hanging out at home, napping, getting sexy with their sig other, or maybe putting the final touches of winterization on the house, as November had now been here for ten days.

Not good old Victor K. Nope. He was sitting in his therapist’s office—aka Baphomet’s rumpus room—being poked in the brainpan by a melon-shaped redhead with new sparkly glasses. The frames were sparkly, not the glass. They were distracting me from discussing all my deep, dark issues.

“I’d be happy to put my glasses in the desk if they’re too funky for you,” offered Dr. Lotnick, who was in shades of brown and pumpkin.

I waved a hand in dismissal. “No, it’s okay. I’ve just never seen any heterosexual with such flamboyant spectacles. You sure you’re not a drag queen at heart?”

She laughed softly, then placed her sparkly glasses on her face, the chains dangling down by her rouged cheeks.

“If I were, I’d be much taller and have far better taste in clothes.”

“Amen.”

She flipped open her notebook and gave me a look. It was a bad look. Like she was planning how to get my gullet up and out through my long nose. It made me wiggle in my seat and tug the knot out of my tie.

“The last time you were here, you said things were getting better with Dan.” She glanced at me, and I nodded. “How are we handling Sander?”

“We’re not unless we have to.” I continued to fiddle with my tie. It was blue and soft, kind of like Dan’s eyes when he woke up. “Thusly, we avoid confrontation. Aren’t we clever?”

“Do you think avoidance is the way to deal with your insecurity and abandonment issues?”

Ouch. Okay, there was the first long mental hook being slid into my nasal cavity.

“No one has ever abandoned me,” I was quick to point out. Her slim little eyebrow rose. “I prayed my mother would, but she didn’t. And as for lovers, it was always me walking away first, so you see, no issues with abandonment at all.”

I crossed my arms, tossed an ankle to a knee, and dared her to argue with a look.

“Didn’t your father abandon you, leaving you with a woman with an addictive and abusive personality?”

“I’m revoking your right to use question marks.”

She began zeroing in. Must be she could smell my fear, the cunning little sadist.

“Let’s talk about your father…”

“Let’s not.” I kept my arms folded over my chest. Like armor. Now, if I could just find a helmet to keep her from probing into my brain through any orifice she could find.

“During our last session, you admitted that you drove past his new place of employment.” She peered over the top of those fucking stupid glasses.

“I didn’t admit that. You and your crochet hook mental devices extracted that from my head.” The acid in my stomach was now burbling like a stew pot.
